Sign up for CodeRED alerts
Kenton County uses CodeRED, a free system run in partnership with Boone County, to send urgent alerts by voice call, text and email. Alerts include severe weather warnings, boil-water advisories, evacuations, AMBER alerts and hazardous road conditions. Don't assume you're already in the system. Sign up yourself.
On the county's CodeRED portal, register, add your devices, then add your address (for example, your home on Carpenter's Trace, plus work or school). Choose topics such as tornado, severe thunderstorm, flash flood, winter storm, ice storm and shelter-in-place warnings.
Save CodeRED as a contact so your phone doesn't block it as spam: texts come from 364-75 and voice calls from 1-206-536-3695. For help, email [email protected]. If you can't register online, call 859-392-1400.
Severe weather and emergency management
Kenton County Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HSEM) coordinates the disaster response for the county and its 19 cities. It works under FEMA and Kentucky Emergency Management guidance.
During a tornado warning, go to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows, and protect your head. A watch means tornadoes are possible, so keep an eye on conditions. A warning means one has been sighted, so take shelter immediately.
The county defines three snow emergency levels. Level I means drive cautiously. Level II means only necessary travel. Level III restricts roads to emergency, work, medical and supply trips. Under the county ordinance, parking on any public road right of way is banned during snow emergencies with 2 inches or more of snow, with fines of $20 to $100.

Your fire department
The Crescent Springs-Villa Hills Fire Department covers Carpenter's Trace from its firehouse at 777 Overlook Drive in Crescent Springs. It also offers American Heart Association CPR classes by appointment. To schedule, call 859-341-3840 during business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00–4:00).
Firefighters test hydrants every year and check them again in the fall before winter. Help them out: keep 3 feet around your hydrant clear of plants, don’t paint it, and shovel it out after snow. Hydrant testing can stir up sediment and briefly discolor your tap water. Run the faucet until it clears.
The department posts burn permit information on its website.
Open burning rules
Kentucky's open-burning rules (401 KAR 63:005) apply here. Burning household garbage, plastics, tires, construction debris and painted or treated wood is illegal, and the state can fine up to $25,000 per day. During fire hazard seasons (Oct. 1–Dec. 15 and Feb. 15–Apr. 30), burning within 150 feet of woodland is allowed only between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Kenton County also has extra restrictions on open burning from May through September.
Check with the fire department about local permits before you burn. To report illegal burning, call 502-782-6592.
