Getting Around from Villa Hills: Buses, CVG & Road Conditions

Carpenter's Trace is a car-first neighborhood. Villa Hills overlooks the Ohio River, with KY 8 (River Road) along the river and Amsterdam Road and Buttermilk Pike leading toward the interstates. Here's what to know about buses, the airport, the Brent Spence project and where to report road problems.

TANK changes coming November 7, 2026

TANK’s service changes take effect Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026. Route 1 will be extended to Newport, ending at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Ft. Thomas. Peak-hour frequency on Routes 3, 7 and 12 increases to every 30 minutes. A new high-frequency corridor will connect downtown Newport, Covington and downtown Cincinnati, replacing the Southbank Shuttle and Route 16. Routes 3 and 12 will run as an interlined pair. Timetables will also be updated.

Getting to CVG airport

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is in Boone County, roughly 4 miles west-southwest of Carpenter's Trace in a straight line. Most people drive or take a ride service. If you want transit, TANK's Route 2X Airporter serves the CVG Airport Terminal, but you'll need to get to one of its stops first.

Brent Spence Bridge Corridor construction

Construction of the Brent Spence companion bridge started in June 2026. The project will add a new double-decker bridge for interstate traffic and convert the existing bridge to serve local traffic, and it is expected to bring detours, lane shifts and delays on I-71/75 for several years. If you head north into Covington or Cincinnati, plan extra time.

Per Kenton County's 2026 notice, ramp changes around the Covington Government Center include closure of the I-71/75 southbound on-ramp from Bullock Avenue/MLK Jr. Blvd (expected to reopen late October 2026), closure of northbound Exit 191 (expected to reopen summer 2027), and permanent closure of the West 5th Street portion of southbound Exit 192. The Government Center's Simon Kenton Way entrance is closed until spring 2027; use Pike Street.

Road conditions and who to call

Who handles a road problem depends on who owns the road. Streets inside Villa Hills are city-maintained. KY 8 (River Road) is a state route, so potholes, dumping, slides, downed trees and snow there go to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6. Kenton County Public Works handles county roads only.

KYTC's GoKY site has statewide traffic and road conditions. The county's road maintenance map shows who maintains any road in Kenton County.
